We Are Nature – Campaign Film

Director, Camera, Editor

I was commissioned by Lawyers For Nature and House Of Hackney to create a film for their campaign to change the dictionary definition of the word ‘nature’, which drew a distinction between nature and humans.

Dictionary definitions are said to reflect the ideas of the time - and this is clearly one that needs an update. Thinking of ourselves as part of the systems of nature and as part of the fabric of the world is, I think, a vital step in our climate recovery - both to understand the challenges we face, and to feel a belonging, a sense of community, and a willingness to protect ‘the greatest group noun of them all’.

For the filmI pulled together a script from the various definitions contributed from a wide group of naturalists, writers and environmentalists, who all independently and uniquely encapsulated the sense that we are an integral part of nature. I really like how so much of the film is made up of shots from local Cornish hedgerows, our garden, and my wider archive, with the odd bit of stock and some brilliant shots donated by Katie Moore, Tom Kirkman and Josh Guyan.
